What to Look for in a Medical Aid

Price is not the only factor that you need to take into consideration when you are looking for a medical aid. There are a few other things that you need to be aware of.

PMBS

PMBS stands for prescribed minimum benefits and are chronic conditions that have to be covered by your medical aid.

Minimum benefits include cover for asthma, diabetes, epilepsy and other such conditions as well as treatment for addiction. In total, there are 27 PMBS that medical schemes cover. You should look for a plan that covers more than this and covers the medication for these ailments.

IN HOSPITAL MEDICAL BENEFITS

Check the in-hospital benefits when you are comparing medical aids as many schemes will cap these.

This means that they will limit the amount that you are able to claim for in-patient treatment. The limits can be a number of days or be a monetary amount. You will need to ensure that any existing or foreseeable medical conditions are catered to with your plan.

DAY TO DAY MEDICAL BENEFITS

The main advantage of a medical aid over a hospital plan is the day to day benefits.

Medical aids offer cover for out-patient care like visits to the GP, dentist and optometrist. Different plans will have different limits on the amount that is covered, so ensure yours covers what you need. You should also check if the plan covers CT and MRI scans as these are considered out-patient care and can be very expensive.

NETWORK OPTION

A medical aid may also have a network option, where you choose a doctor from a network instead of going to the closet GP or hospital.

This can reduce the cost of contributions, but just make sure these network doctors and hospitals are close to you.
